Committee work: The committee's purpose and function is to recruit and retain members, with an emphasis on increasing broad diversity in our organization. Through scholarships, outreach and educational programs, CELA's Diversity Committee looks to diverse communities for expanding our membership base and training new leadership within CELA, as well as working to foster sensitivity and understanding of diversity issues in our practices. The committee welcomes and encourages the representation of traditionally under represented individuals within its membership and board, including persons of color, women, the LGBT community and people with disabilities.

Committee work: Expands the membership's awareness of unique issues facing immigrant clients and their legal representatives. The committee shares information on available remedies for undocumented workers and the irrelevance of immigration status to the recovery of wages and other employment disputes; updates a bank of pre-trial and trial materials on immigration-related litigation issues; collaborates with immigrant worker advocates outside of CELA including non-profits, worker centers, and unions, and more.

Committee work: Carries out CELA's mandate to advance the rights of California employees. Committee members are involved in a number of activities, including drafting legislation concerning employee rights, monitoring bills introduced in the California Legislature that may significantly affect employees' rights, providing technical assistance to legislators and their aides, and communicating with legislators about reasons to support or oppose bills affecting California employees. Committee members may also testify at legislative hearings.

Committee work: This committee coordinates and monitors CELA's e-mail discussion forum on the Internet, where CELA members ask questions, get answers, and share practical advice.

Committee work: Establishes a supportive community and network for new CELA members by helping them develop relationships with more experienced CELA members.

Committee work: CELA's Nominating Committee. This Committee of CELA Board and Regular Members receives nominations for future Board seats; compiles information on the nominees with respect to commitment to CELA, diversity (race, sex, sexual orientation, disability, geographic, practice size, practice area, etc.), availability, interest in serving, and more; and prepares a report with recommendations for the Board's review.

Committee work: CELA's Political Appointments Committee. This committee assesses political and judicial appointment candidates and helps recruit and advocate for candidates who are committed to workers' rights.

Committee work: The committee plans roundtable discussions, webinars and seminars, covering topics such as opening and managing a small law practice, marketing, phone systems, obtaining business licenses, finding office space, managing case flow, law firm software, hardware and information technology, properly retaining clients and declining representation, and hiring and retaining employees.

Committee work: This committee works on issues of particular importance to federal and public sector employees, including maximizing access to due process on the job. The committee encourages members to represent public employees, educates members regarding representing public employees, and makes this area of employment law less mystifying to our fellow members. The committee also plans seminars regarding representing public employees, including the administrative requirements particular to representation of state and federal workers.
