Lobby Day 2014

Lobby Day 2014

March 18, 2014 • Sacramento, CA

On March 18th CELA members will take to the halls of the State Capitol, meeting with members of the legislature to discuss CELA's top priorities!  This year we will be focusing our efforts on court funding (see below).  Lobby Day will be an exciting opportunity for you to discuss with lawmakers the impact the budget cuts have had on you and your clients!

New to CELA, a political novice, or both? No problem! We will have a comprehensive pre-lobby day webinar to get you up to speed on the legislative process and the legislation we will be discussing in our meetings.

The Need for More Court Funding

  • CELA attorneys and the workers we represent are being impacted by closed courtrooms, limited service hours, longer waits, higher costs, longer travel distances, and fewer court staff to assist them.
  • As of January 2014, 51 courthouses and 203 courtrooms have been closed (including 8 courthouses and 79 courtrooms in Los Angeles County).
  • As a result of the closed courthouses, more than 2.2 million people no longer have access to courts in their communities.
  • 30 courts have reduced public service hours
  • 37 courts have reduced self-help/family law facilitator services
  • Access to justice is being denied to Californians who rely on the courts to resolve their conflicts fairly and expeditiously.
  • Absent additional funding, courts anticipate more service reductions.
  • While the Governor’s proposed $105 million baseline adjustment is positive and recognizes that costs have gone up, it is not enough to avoid additional service reductions next year.  The amount of new funding necessary to simply maintain current year service levels is approximately $266 million.
